Dirinaria picta

D. picta (Sw.) Clem. & Shear, Gen. Fungi: 323 (1931).

Lichen pictus Sw., Nova gen. sp. pl.: 146 (1788).

Description : Flora (1985: 163–164).

Chemistry : Cortex K+ yellow; medulla K−, C−. KC−, Pd−; containing divaricatic acid, atranorin, triterpenoids and an ochraceous pigment (K+ purple) in lowest medullary layers.

K: Raoul I. (Denham Bay). On Rhopalostylis sapida and orange tree bark. N: Northland (Herekino Gorge, Helena Bay, Tawhiti Rahi I., Tokatoka, Great Barrier I., Tryphena, Kaukapakapa). Auckland (Rangitoto I.). South Auckland (Hunua Ra., Meremere, Motuhora I., Mokoia I., Rotorua). On bark of Kunzea ericoides, Leptospermum scoparium, Metrosideros excelsa, Phyllocladus and on fenceposts in open grassland. Widely recorded from tropical areas (Awasthi 1975; Swinscow & Krog 1978, 1988; Aptroot 1987, 1988; Aptroot 2002e; Wolseley et al. 2002; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Kalb 2004b).

Dirinaria picta is characterised by: the corticolous/lignicolous habit; the stellate–radiating lobes that are generally pinnatifid and discrete for the greater part, with apices that are not flabellate–confluent; lobes that are more closely appressed to the substratum, somethat thinner, and less wrinkled–plicate than those of D. applanata.
