Austroblastenia is an Australasian genus in the family Megalosporaceae (Sipman 1983; Eriksson et al. 2004; Pennycook & Galloway 2004; Eriksson 2005) comprising two species, both of which occur in New Zealand (Sipman 1983). Neither isidia nor sordia are known in the genus; it has a chemistry comprising pannarin and zeorin; asci are of Lecanora -type (Malcolm & Galloway 1997: 186); the hymenium is from 125 to 250 μm tall always with oil droplets; the subhypothecium is flat and without dark pigments; and the ascospores are of pauciseptata - or pupa -type (Sipman 1983).
