Holotype: New Zealand. Southland, Fiordland, Doubtful Sound, Deep Cove, on rocks near a waterfall, vi.1927, G. Einar & Greta Du Rietz 1933 – S.
Description : Flora (1985: 167).
N: North Auckland (Kerikeri). S: Nelson (Pelorus Bridge), Canterbury (Arthur's Pass), Otago (feeder stream of Teviot River, N branch above Lake Onslow), Southland (Deep Cove Doubtful Sound). On humid rocks near streams and waterfalls, probably more widespread, small and easily overlooked. Known also from North America. Tanzania, China and Papua New Guinea (Henssen 1963d: 51; Schultz 2004a).

Ephebe ocellata is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the filiform, entangled greenish blue or blackish thallus; immersed apothecia; 16-spored asci with broadly oblong or ellipsoidal ascospores, 7–11 × 3.5–7 μm.
