Nephroma plumbeum

Chemistry : TLC−, all reactions negative.

N: South Auckland (Raglan, King Country); Gisborne (Urewera National Park); Wellington (Tiritea, Palmerston North). S: Westland (Franz Josef); Otago (Leith Valley, Green Island, Akatore); Southland (Wilmot Pass, Doubtful Sound, Forest Hill, Waihopai Scenic Reserve, Invercargill). St: On twigs in damp shady, humid habitats. Not a common species in New Zealand. Also known from Juan Fernandez and southern Chile (White & James (1988).

Nephroma plumbeum is distinguished from other species of Nephroma in New Zealand by the cyanobacterial photobiont; its 1(–3)-septate spores, negative chemistry, and pale blue-grey rather ragged upper surface. Variation is discussed by White & James (1988: 153).
