Graphina Müll.Arg.

GRAPHINA Müll. Arg., 1880

Thallus crustose, epi- or endophloeodal, ecorticate or with a cortex of longitudinal hyphae. Photobiont green, Trentepohlia. Lirellae immersed to sessile, elongate or branched, lips connivent to open, entire to sulcate. Hymenium ascohymenial, paraphyses unbranched and free, asci not formed in loculi. Ascospores colourless, muriform.

Graphina is a cosmopolitan genus of c. 270 species included in the family Graphidaceae. Much useful information on the genus is given by Wirth and Hale [ Contr. U.S. natn. Herb. 36 (3): 63-119 (1963); Smithson. Contr. Bot. 40: 1-64 (1978)]. Three species are recorded from New Zealand [Hayward N.Z. J. Bot. 15: 565-584 (1977)].
