Atriplex buchananii var. tenuicaulis Petrie

Var. tenuicaulis Petrie in T.N.Z.I. 47, 1915, 54.

Type locality: "Id. off Otatara Oreti Mouth Southland". Type: W, J. Crosby Smith, 1913. Also collected on Centre Id, Foveaux Strait, by T. Kirk, Jan. 19, 1884. Similar plants occur near Dunedin.

Plant up to ± 20 cm. tall; stems and branches more slender, ascending to erect, flexible; branchlets farinose. Lvs rather distant in lower part, ± crowded in upper, 7-10 × 2-6 mm., ovate to narrowly ovate-oblong to ± elliptic, obtuse (rather narrow and broad lvs on same plant).

DIST.: S.

A somewhat polymorphic sp. probably separable into further vars, but fresh or spirit material is necessary for exact determination. A specimen in W, collected by L. Cockayne "8/12/1919, salt ground, Lowburn" has very stout stems and main branches, slender farinose branchlets, lvs rather uniform, 7-11 × 4-6 mm., ± obovate-oblong, distinctly petioled.
