Coccocarpia pellita (Ach.) Müll.Arg.

C. pellita (Ach.) Müll. Arg. emend. R. Sant., Symb. bot. upsal. 12: 420 (1952).

Parmelia pellita Ach., Lich. Univ.: 468 (1810).

Thallus ± orbicular, to 6 cm diam. Lobes 0.3-0.6 cm wide, adjacent to somewhat imbricate, broadly cuneate to flabellate, apices rotund. Upper surface isidiate, often also with transverse, concentric ridges. Isidia flattened, squamulose, marginal or laminal. Rhizines pale, forming a ± dense matt on the lower surface. Apothecia not seen in New Zealand material.

N: Three Kings Is, North Auckland (Pandora, Kaitaia, Rangitoto I.) to South Auckland (Mt Mangatawhiri, Coromandel, Lake Rotoiti). S: Nelson (Lake Rotoiti). An epiphyte of coastal broad-leaved forest trees and shrubs, mainly in northern New Zealand from s.l. to 400 m.

Pantropical

C. pellita is separated from C. palmicola on the basis of its squamulose isidia. It is still very much undercollected in New Zealand.
