Glyphis Ach.

GLYPHIS Ach., 1814

Thallus crustose, epiphloeodal, thin, effuse or lacking. Photobiont green, Trentepohlia (yellow-green or yellow-orange when cortex of fresh material is scratched). Apothecia in confluent pseudostromata, radiately crowded, disc open, dilated. Ascospores colourless, ellipsoid, transversely septate.

Glyphis, a genus of c. 30 mainly tropical species included in the family Graphidaceae [Nakanishi J. Sci. Hiroshima Univ. ser. B. Div. 2 (Bot.) 11 (1): 51-126 (1966)] is characterised by the radiate-stellate to irregular or flexuose apothecia embedded in a raised, prominent stroma-like tissue, and the colourless, transversely-septate spores. One species is known from New Zealand.
