Description : Flora (1985: 388–389 – as Phlyctella subuncinata).
Chemistry : Thallus K+ yellow; containing stictic and constictic acids and an unidentified compound.
N: Northland to Wellington. S: Nelson to Southland. A widely distributed pioneer species on smooth bark. Known also from E Australia [Phlyctis wilsonii Müll.Arg., is a synonym of P. uncinata (Galloway 1985a: 388–389; Kantvilas 1990c)] and Tasmania (Kantvilas & James 1991; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Phlyctis subuncinata is characterised by: the corticolous habit; irregular, fleck-like, white, sorediate-leprose patches marking the position of immersed, clustered apothecia; hyaline, fusiform, 7-septate ascospores, 40–72 × 5–7 μm; and stictic acid in the medulla.
