Lecidea lapicida var. pantherina

L. lapicida var.pantherina Ach., K. Sv. Vetensk.-Akad. Nya Handl. 1808: 232 (1808).

Description : As for L. lapicida var. lapicida.

Chemistry : Cortex K+ yellow→red, C−, KC+ red, Pd+ orange; containing norstictic (major), connorstictic (minor), and constictic (tr.) acids.

S: Nelson (upper Cobb Valley), Canterbury (Phipps Peak, Two Thumbs Ra., Mt Peel), Otago (Hyde Rock, Old Man Ra., Rock & Pillar Ra., Flagstaff, Maungatua). On alpine to high-alpine rocks (schist and greywacke). Known also from montane to arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere and from Tierra del Fuego and SE Australia (Hertel 1971b, 1975a, 1981, 1984b, 1985b, 1987b, 1991, 1997, 2001; Rambold 1989; Wirth 1995b; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Lecidea lapicida var. pantherina is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; and similar characters as in L. lapicida var. lapicida (above) but with the norstictic acid chemosyndrome in the medulla.
