Maronea A.Massal.

MARONEA A.Massal., 1856

Type : Maronea berica A.Massal. [=Maronea constans (Nyl.) Hepp]

Description : Thallus crustose, ecorticate, uniform, corticolous. Photobiont green, trebouxioid. Ascomata apothecia, adnate to sessile, margins concolorous with thallus. Epithecium brown to black. Hymenium colourless, 60–22 μm tall, with or without oil droplets. Hypothecium colourless to pale yellow-brown or greyish, to 80 μm thick. Asci cylindrical–clavate, multi-spored. Ascospores simple to 1-septate, colourless, very small.

Maronea is a cosmopolitan genus of 13 species (Magnusson 1934; Singh 1980; Harris 2006) included in the family Fuscideaceae (Hafellner 1984, 1995a; Eriksson et al. 2004; Pennycook & Galloway 2004; Eriksson 2005). One species occurs in New Zealand and is found on the bark of introduced trees in urban and rural areas.
