Pyxine subcinerea

Description : Flora (1985: 494).

K: Raoul I. (on Araucaria, Citrus sinensis, Prunus sp.) N: Northland (Te Huka, Spirits Bay, Karikari Peninsula, Carpenter's Bay, Poor Knights Is, Chicken I., Little Barrier I., Whangarei, Goat I. near Leigh), Auckland (Anawhata, Auckland Domain), South Auckland (Coromandel Peninsula, Great Mercury I., Whale I.). S: Marlborough (d'Urville I.). On bark of coastal trees and shrubs (Casuarina, Coprosma, Corynocarpus laevigatus, Cordyline australis, Metrosideros excelsa) and on introduced deciduous trees, fence posts in grassland, and occasionally on maritime rocks. Widespread in the tropics (Swinscow & Krog 1975a, 1988; Rogers 1986; Aptroot 1987, 1989; Sammy 1988; Kalb 1994a, 2002; Aptroot 2002e; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Moberg 2004b). Also in the Azores and Liguria in Italy (Moberg 1983a; Nimis 1993; Nimis & Martellos 2003), and in the eastern United States (Amtoft 2002).

Pyxine subcinerea is characterised by: the corticolous/lignicolous/saxicolous habit; the yellow medulla; marginal soralia; subapical, glistening patches of pruina; and lichexanthone (UV+ yellow) in the medulla.
