Melaspilea subeffigurans (Nyl.) Müll.Arg.

Lectotype (fide Hayward, loc. cit.): New Zealand. Otago, Dunedin, on bark of totara pine. W.L. Lindsay, H-NYL 6227.

Thallus crustose, thin, scurfy, white, sometimes disappearing. Lirellae black, irregular, contorted, becoming ± circular, disc black. Ascospores brown, locules uneven, 15-18(-21) × 5-8 µm. Chemistry: Nil.

S: Known only from the type collection.

Endemic

Material gathered by Lindsay on 4 November 1861 from Green Island Bush, Otago (E) grows with the type of Arthonia platygraphella Nyl. Other specimens from Lindsay's Otago collections (BM) are associated with Chrysothrix candelaris and Punctelia subrudecta. The species has not been collected since Lindsay's 1861 gatherings.
