Chemistry : Atranorin, sphaerophorin, isosphaerophoric acid, russulone, ±psoromic acid (Staiger & Kalb 1995).
N: Northland (Three Kings Is, Pandora Beach, Poor Knights Is, Chickens Is). On northern coastal rocks at or above high-tide mark. Often associating with Roccellina exspectata. Known also from southern Europe (Minorca), South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, the United States (Arizona, Texas), Mexico, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile, and Lord Howe I. (Staiger & Kalb 1995; Becker 2002; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Staiger et al. 2004).

Haematomma fenzlianum is characterised by: the saxicolous, maritime habit; the grey-white, thick, continuous to uneven, granular or areolate cracked thallus; and scattered, epruinose, scarlet apothecia.
