Hypogymnia lugubris var. sublugubris (Müll.Arg.) Elix
Parmelia physodes var. sublugubris Müll. Arg., Flora 66: 75 (1883).
This variety resembles H. lugubris var. lugubris, in having loosely dichotomously branched, discrete lobes, but differs in that overall the thallus is smaller and lobes narrower (1-2 mm wide) and more regularly and densely branched which often leads to the centre of the thallus being resonably compact. Lobes are markedly dorsiventral. Chemistry: Cortex K+ yellow; medulla KC+ red, Pd± red-orange. Atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic, 3-hydroxyphysodic, physodalic ± 2'-O-methylphysodic ±, protocetraric ± and alectoronic ± acids.
N: From Rotorua south. S: St: On twigs, bark, dead wood and more rarely on rocks and soil; mainly subalpine to alpine, rarely lowland. Variation in this taxon is discussed by Elix ( loc. cit. ).
