Original localities: "Southern Alps, alt. 2500-4000 ft., Trinity Hill, Forest Creek, Ashburton and Great Clyde Glaciers, clefts of rock on Mt. Darwin, etc., Sinclair and Haast". Type: K, Prov. Cant., Sinclair and Haast.
Glab. subshrub much branched from woody base; branches sprawling to ± erect, sts rooting at lower nodes, slender to rather stout, terete, up to c. 2 dm. long. Lvs close-set, sessile and very shortly connate, 8-20-(30) × 1·5-4 mm., linear to linear-lanceolate, subacute to acute, entire, glab., narrowed gradually to sparsely ciliolate, subsheathing, persistent base, midrib depressed above, prominent below. Racemes 2-4-(7) -fld, sts reduced to solitary bibracteate fl., glab. in all parts; peduncles 1-2-(3) cm. long; bracts up to 8 mm. long, linear; pedicels (5)-10-25 mm. long, > bracts. Calyx-lobes 5-8 mm. long, linear-oblong, obtuse, glab. Corolla white to pink, bowl-shaped, 10-15 mm. diam.; tube very short, much < calyx; lobes 4, unequal, broad-obovate, obtuse, largest up to 8 × 9 mm. Capsule 4-6 × 4-5 mm., < or = calyx, obcordate, us. compressed, glab.
