N: Northland (Three Kings Is) to Wellington. S: Nelson to Southland. St: A: C: Ch.: Widespread throughout [map in Galloway (1997: 146, fig. 30)], common, s.l. to 1000 m, coastal and inland. A conspicuous and often richly developed epiphyte of trees and shrubs, rarely on rocks in deep shade in humid habitats. Known also from Australia (Galloway 1998e, 2001f; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Sticta latifrons is characterised by: the corticolous (rarely saxicolous) habit; its robust holdfast; a thick, terete, supporting stalk, and large, thick, coriaceous lobes with entire margins and scattered, laminal, red-brown apothecia. It is the largest and most robust stalked green species of the genus in New Zealand (or elsewhere) and is the most commonly collected. Specimens from Fiordland and Stewart I. have a predominantly pale lower surface and thin, rather fragile lobes that arise directly from the holdfast. "Dendriscocaulon" with attached lobes of S. latifrons are occasionally met with (see James & Henssen 1976). See also Galloway (1997: 112. fig. 6).
