Aristida vagans

ξA. vagans Cav. ξTufts 30-50 cm, with wiry culms and with few branches from lower nodes; ligule ciliate, 0.2 mm; collar with a few longer hairs to 1 mm; leaf-blade involute, abaxially glabrous, adaxially shortly pubescent with a few longer hairs; culm 18-40 cm, internodes glabrous; panicle 6-9 cm, with few, short branches; spikelets 7-8 mm; glumes purple, the lower 4-5 mm, upper 6-7 mm; lemma convolute, > glumes, 3-awned, with awns 9-12 mm. Although this Australian species was in 1949 attributed a New Zealand origin from exported wool [Probst, R. Wolladventivflora Mitteleuropas 11 (1949)] only one specimen has been seen, CHR 71840 J. P. Beggs Fairhall, near Blenheim, 11.6.1951; a note on the label states that it was locally believed to have been present for about 10 years.
