Parmeliella concinna

P. concinna I.M.Lamb, Farlowia 4: 431 (1955).

Description : Thallus forming small, scattered, orbicular, effigurate patches 5–12 mm diam., rather loosely attached, laciniate, without isidia, soredia or prothallus. Laciniae small 0.5–1.5 mm long and 0.3–0.7 mm wide, plane to subconcave, irregularly divided, rounded and crenate at apices, confluent centrally and becoming subsquamulose. Upper surface matt, smooth, grey-brown to glaucous-olive, not paler at margins. Lower surface smooth, glabrous, pale-buff, without rhizohyphae. Photobiont ±globose, 5–9 μm diam., in irregular clusters, not in chains. Apothecia numerous, clustered centrally, rounded, 0.5–0.9 mm diam.; disc pale-pinkish to red-brown, plane to convex; proper exciple paler than disc, prominent at first becoming excluded at maturity. Ascospores ellipsoidal, wall smooth, 13.5–16 × 6–8 μm.

Chemistry : TLC−, all reactions negative.

S: Nelson (near Springs Junction). Occurring on lower trunks and buttresses of Nothofagus fusca in moderate to deep shade, Often growing with Calycidium cuneatum. Still poorly collected and known in New Zealand. Known also from Argentina and Chile (Lamb 1955, 1959; Galloway & Quilhot 1999; Calvelo & Liberatore 2001).

Parmeliella concinna is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the small thallus, 5–12 mm diam; small laciniae, 0.5–1.5 mm long and 0.3–0.7 mm wide, irreguarly divided, rounded or crenate, becoming confluent and subsquamulose; numerous, clustered, central apothecia, 0.5–0.9 mm diam., the disc pale-pinkish to red-brown; and ellipsoidal ascospores, 13.5–16 × 6–8 μm.
