Avena sterilis L. subsp. sterilis

subsp. sterilis

Spikelets 6-8 cm, 3-5-flowered, often drooping. Lemma 25-30 mm, light reddish brown, with dense stiff reddish brown hairs below awn insertion; awn very stout, 60-70 mm. Anthers 3-4 mm.

N.: North Auckland (near Whangarei), Auckland City, Waikato (Waerenga); Cook Strait (Stephens Id); S.: Dunedin. In waste land.

Naturalised from Mediterranean.
