Tribulus terrestris
ζ*Tribulus terrestris L. ζ*, caltrop plant, was collected once at Port Ahuriri, Napier, where it fortunately did not become established. A prostrate annual herb; lvs pinnate with opposite leaflets; fls axillary, solitary, yellow; stamens 10; fr. splitting into 5 cocci; cocci indehiscent, dorsally tuberculate, fiercely spinous. This sp. is a widespread and notorious weed in temperate and subtropical regions; in addition to the prominently spinous frs, which resemble those of Soliva spp. (Asteraceae), the plants are poisonous to stock. (Mediterranean region, 1914).
