Juncus procerus E.Mey.

*J. procerus E. Meyer Linnaea 3, 1828, 367.

Very robust; rhizome stout, woody. Stems 100-150 cm × 3.5-8 mm, soft, yellow-green, smooth, pith interrupted by large cavities. Basal sheaths very loose often becoming flat above and to 2.5 cm wide, dull brown to dark reddish towards base. Inflorescence to 10 cm long, much-branched, effuse. Flowers numerous, clustered at branchlet tips. Tepals c. 2.5 mm long, ± equal, ± acute. Stamens 3- (4). Capsules c. 2.5 mm long, ± = tepals, ± oblong, light brown, often darker at flattened top.

N. North Auckland - Kaipara Harbour; Auckland City. S. Nelson - Aorere Valley, Bald Hill near Westport; Otago - Lawyers Bay near Dunedin, Lake Waihola, Tautuku Bay; Southland - near Waituna Lagoon. St. Rare and local only. (S. America; Chile and Patagonia)

First collection: Type of J. pallidus var. triandrus (see above).

Formerly treated in N.Z. as J. pallidus R. Br. var. triandrus Cheesem. Man. N.Z. Fl. 1906, 725

(Type:AK 2925, St John' s College, Auckland, T. F. Cheeseman, Dec., 1883; isotype at CHR).

The most robust of the leafless spp., resembling J. pallidus but stouter, and recognised by the interrupted pith with large cavities.
