Heterodermia japonica

Chemistry : Atranorin, zeorin and norstictic acid.
N: Northland (Three Kings Is), Auckland (Domain), Taranaki (Stratford). S: Marlborough (Chetwode Is). On bark of trees and shrubs, coastal and inland. Known also from Great Britain, Europe, the Azores, the Canary Is, Madeira, East and South Africa, Asia, Indonesia North America and Panama (Kurokawa 1962; Swinscow & Krog 1988; Purvis et al. 1992 (as Heterodermia obscurata); Moberg & Purvis 1997; Büdel et al. 2000; Chen & Wang 2001; Becker 2002; Coppins 2002b; Moberg & Nash 2002; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Moberg 2004a, 2004b).

Heterodermia japonica is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the matt upper surface and fan-like lobe apices; the absence of a lower cortex, and a blackish violet lower surface.
