Solidago virgaurea

ζ*S. virgaurea L.

ζ*S. virgaurea L. ζ* has been collected once in Christchurch (CHR 88944, Riccarton, established on river banks etc., Healy 54/75, 12.4.1954). A stoloniferous perennial up to c. 1 m tall; stems hairy; lvs oblanceolate, indistinctly pinnately veined, the lower serrate, sparsely hairy; infl. of dense terminal corymbose panicles; the branches erect with capitula on all sides; disc florets c. 8-9. The plant is a cv., probably one of those raised from hybridising S. canadensis and S. virgaurea, but is clearly closer to S. virgaurea. It is similar to S. virgaurea in most characters, but is taller, with narrower lvs, denser infls, and fewer disc florets than is typical of that sp. (Europe, 1988).
