S: Canterbury (Torlesse Ra., Mt Cooper upper Murchison Valley, Mt Peel, Blue Mountain, Four Peaks Ra., Kirkliston Ra.), Otago (St Bathans Ra., Pisa Ra., Lake Mackay, The Remarkables, Dunstan Mts, Mt Kyeburn, Old Man Ra., Umbrella Mts). On rock in crevices, alpine, 1600–2500 m. An arctic–alpine species known also from Europe, Scandinavia, the Artic and North America (Brodo & Hawksworth 1977; Nimis 1993; Santesson 1993; Elvebakk & Hertel 1997; Goward 1999; Brodo et al. 2001; Ryan 2002d; Nimis & Martellos 2003; Santesson et al. 2004).

Pseudephebe minuscula is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the small (1–3(–7) cm diam.) somewhat flattened, rosette-forming thallus; subterete to flattened branches; glossy red-brown to brown-black upper surface, paler below.
