Var. spectabilis.

A distinct var. well represented by fig. 33A of Fl. N.Z. and common in the type locality. Lamina ± 8-12 × 1·5-2.5 cm.; upper surface surface, rather pale green; lower surface densely clad in soft, velvety, subappressed, pale yellowish to buff tomentum. Scape stout, up to ± 25 cm. long, densely clad in floccose white hairs. Capitula up to 5 cm. diam., phyll. densely clad without in white floccose hairs. Similar forms occur in the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges.
