Sclerophora sanguinea

Description : Flora (1985: 146–147 – as Coniocybe sanguinea).
N: Northland (Kaitaia), South Auckland (S of Maungaweka, Hihitahi State Forest), Gisborne (Te Araroa), Wellington (Ohakune). S: Nelson (Pelorus Bridge), Marlborough (Mt Fyffe). On lignum in shaded and humid situations, on Agathis australis, Cordyline australis, Dacrydium cupressinum, Ixerba brexioides, Leptospermum scoparium, Metrosideros robusta, Podocarpus totara, Salix sp., s.l. to 750 m. Known also from Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil and Australia (Tibell 1987, 1996b; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Sclerophora sanguinea is characterised by: the lignicolous habit; its reddish brown apothecia with very slender stalks, the pale mazedium; the porrectulate margin of the excipulum; and the distinctive white collar at the base of the capitulum.
