Type: New Zealand, Stewart Is., Tin Range, N of Pegasus, ca. 1000 ft., Schuster & Scott 49981 (herb. Schuster, G, S-PA, NY).
Plants very soft-textured and lax. Leaves not at all spinescent, usually quadrifid to 0.5–0.6; lobes lanceolate, broad-based, 8–12(14) cells wide at the base, gradually long-acuminate, ending in a setiform uniseriate row of up to 7–8 elongated (2.8–5:1) cells; lobes usually quite free of cilia; disc (8)9–12(14) cells high, obtrapezoidal, the lateral margins bearing 1–2(3) slender, often long, tapering cilia on each side. Leaves and underleaves near androecia more copiously ciliate-dentate but hardly spinescent. Cells with surface indistinctly papillose. Oil-bodies small for size of cell, (6)7–9(10) per cell, 4.4–4.8 µm and spherical to ellipsoidal and 3.8 × 7.5 to 3.5–5.5 × 4.5–6 µm.
Distribution and Ecology : Known only from Stewart Island and Otago and Westland Prov. in South Island, New Zealand. It is aquatic to subaquatic, occurring in shallow, flowing rivulets or boggy niches in open areas (300–1170 m).
