Brachypodium distachyon

ξB. distachyon (L.) P.Beauv. ξPlants annual, tufted, 20-28 cm. Leaf-blade with scattered long coarse hairs. Culm nodes densely, shortly pubescent. Racemes 4-7 cm, stiffly erect, of 2-4 ± laterally compressed, overlapping, shortly pedicelled spikelets. Spikelets 2.5-3.5 cm, 8-12-flowered. Glumes 6-7-nerved. Lemma c. 8.5 mm, 7-nerved, finely scabrid; awn to c. 15 mm. Palea ≈ lemma, keels with large, widely spaced prickle-teeth. Anthers 0.4 mm in cleistogamous flowers, 0.7-0.9 mm in chasmogamous flowers. A Mediterranean species once collected on Great Barrier Id, North Auckland E. K. Cameron 5186 2.1.1989 (AKU 21482).
