Hypotrachyna neodissecta

H. neodissecta (Hale) Hale, Smiths. Contr. Bot. 25: 49 (1975).

Parmelia neodissecta Hale, Phytologia 22: 94 (1971).

Description : Thallus adnate to loosely attached, rather fragile, pale greenish, ashy grey, 3–7 cm diam. Lobes sublinear, twig specimens deeply incised, ±ascending, revolute lobes 2–3 mm wide, tree trunk and rock specimens with short lobes, 5–8 mm wide. Upper surface isidiate, without maculae. Isidia crowded laminally, cylindrical, simple, rarely with short, inconspicuous cilia. Medulla white. Lower surface moderately rhizinate, rhizines short, sparsely to moderately branched, rarely projecting beyond margins, but occasionally visible at axils. Apothecia not seen.

Chemistry : Cortex K+ yellow; medulla K−, C+ red, KC+ red, Pd−; containing atranorin, gyrophoric and 5- O- methylhiascic acids.

N: ??? Known also Africa, North and South America (Nash et al. 2002b).

Hypotrachyna neodissecta is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the crowded, short, simple, cylindrical isidia, sometimes with projecting cilia; and gyrophoric and 5- O- methyhiascic acids (KC+ red) in the medulla).
