Var. rufiglandulosus

Var. rufiglandulosus (Col.) Allan comb. nov. 

S. rufiglandulosis Col. in T.N.Z.I. 28, 1896, 599.

Type locality: "East sides of Ruahine Range about 3000'-4000' alt. on margins of watercourses, and also on dry stony spots: Mr A. Olsen; 1894-95." Type: 3 sheets in the Colenso Herb. (W) bear no indication of collector or locality; 3394 is identified in Colenso's handwriting.

Stems stouter, lvs not lobed, more densely glandular-hairy, more distant; corymbs large; achenes very densely pubescent. Two forms may be distinguished: (a) stems sparingly pubescent; lower lvs ovate, acute, irregularly coarsely doubly dentate, lamina c. 10 × 5 cm.; petiole = or < lamina, wings sparingly or not toothed; upper lvs narrower, seldom > 1·5 cm. wide, more evenly toothed; (b) stems rather densely glandular-pubescent, more deeply grooved; lower lvs more densely glandular, broadly ovate, obtuse, serrate-dentate, c. 10 × 6·5 cm.; petiole rather < lamina, more widely winged, with broader auricles; upper lvs up to 4 cm. wide; capitula 3 cm. diam., phyll. densely glandular.

DIST.: N. From lat. 39° southwards, both forms reaching to subalpine scrub on Mount Egmont. S. Buller River and tributaries, form (a).
