Chemistry : Thallus K+ yellow, C−, KC−, Pd+ red; containing atranorin and fumarprotocetraric acid.

S: Nelson (Flora Saddle, St Arnaud Ra.), Marlborough (Mt Stokes), Canterbury (Arthur's Pass, Porter's Pass), Otago (Hunter Valley, Routeburn Valley, Trotter's Gorge, Leith Valley), Southland (Grebe Valley). St: (Mt Anglem, Tin Ra., Port Pegasus). On shaded rocks in forested areas, s.l. to 2100 m.

Stereocaulon fronduliferum is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the laterally compressed pseudopodetia with flattened, leaf-like phyllocladia that are pale on the lower surface; and a chemistry of atranorin and fumarprotocetraric acid.
