Flora of New Zealand Series

Holotype: New Zealand. South I. Marlborough, 6 km NW of Kaikoura, Kowhai Bush, along entrance to Schoolhouse Road, 4.ii.1981, L. Tibell 19711 – UPS. Isotypes – BG, CHR 528304.

Description : Thallus forming extensive areolate crusts, often several centimetres in diam., developed on a thin to well-developed, blackish prothallus. Squamules up to 1 mm diam., and to 160 μm thick, olivaceous-brown centrally, margins grey-blue, granular, granules at length covering whole of upper surface. Apothecia very rare, to 1 mm diam., initially with a flat, dark-brown disc and distinct thalline margin, eventually convex with an excluded margin. Hymenium colourless, to 100 μm tall, I+ blue-green rapidly turning red-brown. Asci clavate, 80–90 × 15–16 μm with distinct amyloid, apical ring-structure. Ascospores broadly ellipsoidal, rarely fully developed, 13–15 × 10–11 μm. Pycnidia not seen.

Chemistry : TLC−, all reactions negative.

N: Northland (7 km N of Warkworth). S: Nelson (W of Reefton), Canterbury (Boyle River, Hanmer State Forest). On flaking bark of Leptospermum scoparium. Known also from a single collection from treeline on the Bimberi Ras, Australian Capital Territory (Jørgensen 2001b: 112; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Fuscopannaria granulans is an insignificant species forming granulose crusts on the bark of Leptospermum scoparium. It is similar to F. minor, but is distinguished by the blue-grey granules covering the squamules.
