Fuscopannaria crustata

Description : Flora (1985: 331 – as Pannaria crustata). See also Jørgensen & Galloway (1992b: 263–264).

Chemistry : TLC−, all reactions negative.

N: Northland (Helena Bay), South Auckland (Motuhora I.), Gisborne (Mt Hikurangi), Wellington (Rangitikei Gorge E of Taihape, York Bay). S: Nelson (Maitai Valley, Black Hill Lake Rotoiti), Marlborough (Resolution Bay, Branch River), Canterbury (Hanmer, Banks Peninsula, Peel Forest), Otago (Lake Ohau, Trotter's Gorge, Waikouaiti River, Mt Cargill, Swampy Hill Dunedin). St: (Lonnekers Beach). On rocks both coastal and inland, in moderate to deep shade at forest margins and interiors, also in alpine grassland. Known also from wet, ±calcareous rocks in SE Australia (Jørgensen & Galloway 1992b: 264).

Fuscopannaria crustata is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the densely lobulate, squamulose thallus; red to yellow-red apothecial discs with a persistent, pale proper margin; and acuminate ascospores.
