Senecio cassinioides Hook.f.

S. cassinioides Hook. f. Handbk N.Z. Fl. 1864, 163.

Type locality: "Wairau Pass, alt. 5000'". Type: K, Sinclair, 1860.

Much-branched shrub up to 3 m. tall with deciduous papery bark; branchlets brittle, tomentose when young, clad in imbricating lvs. Lvs sessile, 4-8 × c. 2 mm., coriac., narrow-oblong, obtuse to subacute, entire, glab. above when mature, clad in white to yellowish white appressed tomentum below. Capitula solitary, sessile, terminal, us. < 1 cm. diam.; phyll. narrow-oblong, apiculate, coriac., tomentose, with scarious margins. Ray-florets 4-6, ligules short, broad, recurved, yellow. Achenes 2 mm. long, linear, grooved, glab.; pappus-hairs stiff, slender, barbellate, up to 5·5 mm. long.

DIST.: S. Montane to lower subalpine shrubland throughout, east of divide in middle part of range.
