Holotype: New Zealand. Canterbury, Weka Pass, c. 250 m, on limestone in disused railway cutting, 10.ix.1981, H. Mayrhofer 2329, T. Ahti & L. Brako – GZU.

Description : Flora (1985: 513).

Chemistry : TLC−, all reactions negative.

S: Canterbury (Castle Hill Basin, Cave Stream, Weka Pass, Montserrat near Omihi, NW of Motunau Beach, Milford), Otago (Duntroon). On limestone rocks.

Endemic

Exsiccati : Vězda (1995a, no. 157).

Rinodina nigricans is characterised by: the saxicolous (basicolous habit); the dark grey-brown to blackish brown, granular, warted to areolate thallus; lecanorine apothecia; Bicincta -type ascospores, 15–19 × 8–11 μm.
