Opegrapha puiggarii

O. puiggarii Müll.Arg., Flora 63: 42 (1880).

Description : Thallus foliicolous, rounded to irregular, to 2.5 cm diam., continuous to dispersed, grey to brownish grey, usually with small (0.03–0.05 mm diam.) black verrucae. Prothallus thin, indistinct or brown. Apothecia lirelline, scattered, black, linear, rarely slightly branched, straight or subarcuate or sulcate, 0.4–2.5 mm long, (0.15–)0.2–0.25 mm wide, and 60–90 μm high; disc brownish black, very narrow but usually not completely covered by black lips. Paraphysoids 1 μm thick, branched and anastomosing. Asci oblong, 35–60 × 14–20 μm, (4–)8-spored. Ascospores fusiform, 7–14-septate, (25–)28–42 × 4–6 μm, with a perispore 1–2 μm thick.

N: Auckland (Waitakere Ra.). On dead tissue at base of mature Agathis australis leaves (Bartlett 1988: 17). Not commonly collected. Known also from Colombia, Brazil, the Cameroons, Philippines and E Australia (Santesson 1952; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Opegrapha puiggarii is characterised by: the foliicolous habit; the pale, brownish grey thallus; scattered black, linear, subarcuate rarely branched lirellae; (4–)8-spored asci; and 7–14-septate fusiform ascospores, (25–)28–42 × 4–6 μm with a perispore 1–2 μm thick.
