Spiraea douglasii

ζ*S. douglasii Hook.

ζ*S. douglasii Hook. ζ* is sometimes grown in N.Z. as an ornamental shrub and at Naseby, Otago, has escaped from cemetery plantings (e.g.,CHR 122264, Healy 58/364, 23.2.1958). An erect, thicket-forming shrub up to c. 2 m high; stems reddish brown and tomentose and bark becoming papery; lvs ascending and ± elliptic-oblong, 40-100 mm long, dull and somewhat rugose with impressed veins above, white- or grey-tomentose below, irregularly serrate; apex rounded, obtuse or subacute; infl. an elongated, tomentose panicle 60-140 mm long; fls deep rose. (N. America, 1982).
