Steinera radiata

S. radiata P.James & Henssen, Bull. Br. Mus. ( Nat. Hist. ) Bot. 10: 252 (1982).

Holotype: New Zealand. Southland, Doubtful Sound, Mt Barber above Deep Cove, on boulders in brook in the subalpine scrub belt, 3.iii.1927, G. Einar & Greta Du Rietz 2063 : 1 – BM. Isotypes – CHR, MB, UPS.

Description : Flora (1985: 541).

S: Southland, Fiordland (Doubtful Sound). Known only from the type locality.

Endemic

Steinera radiata ssp. radiata is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; paraphyses that are branched at apices but not submoniliform; and subglobose to shortly ellipsoidal ascospores, 8–10.5 × 6.5–7.5 μm. Steinera radiata is a distinctive species forming neat rosettes, with emergent to sessile apothecia, which are at first deeply innate. The species has ? Rivularia and not Nostoc as photobiont. Anatomically its apothecia are similar to those of Coccocarpia. As in other species of the genus in New Zealand, distribution appears to be rare and local
