Erect, summer-green perennial. Rhizome stout, fleshy, far-extending. Stems 30-90 cm high, arching, stout, sometimes woody below, terete, sheath-bearing below, leafy above. Leaves numerous, 6-20 × 2-8 cm, sessile, or with petiole < 1 cm long, alternate, in one plane along stem, appearing distichous, oblong-elliptic, glaucous-green, parallel veins distinct, impressed on upper surface, ridged below. Flowers 1.5-2.2 cm long, in 2-4-flowered axillary, stalked, pendent clusters; peduncles and pedicels stiff, ± flattened; perianth ± fleshy, constricted toward middle, greenish-white; lobes green, spreading, tip ciliate. Ovary c. 5 mm long. Fruit not seen.

S. Canterbury - Christchurch, Ashburton, Pleasant Point; Otago - Tapanui. Waste land, garden outcast.
