Juncus pusillus Buchenau

J. pusillus Buchenau Abh. Nat. Ver. Bremen 6, 1879, 395.

Small slender tufts to c. 2 cm high from a very slender rhizome. Leaves filiform, usually > stems, transverse septa not visible externally. Inflorescence usually of 1- (3) small flowers. Stamens 6. Capsule c.2 mm long, ± = tepals, red-brown.

N. Auckland - Hauhungaroa Range; Mt Egmont; Hawkes Bay; Wellington. S., St., A., C. Swampy ground from sea-level to 1500 m. (Australia)

Larger plants of J. pusillus may be difficult to distinguish from J. novae-zelandiae, but J. pusillus has more slender leaves and its capsules are not black at maturity.
