Lecanographa abscondita

Description : Thallus thin, continuous to scurfy or verrucose–areolate, yellowish to greenish grey. Apothecia 0.2–0.6(–0.8) mm diam., sessile; disc plane, black, with a bluish white pruina. Ascospores 3–5-septate, halonate at first, becoming brown-warted, 15–23 × 5–8 μm.

Chemistry : Thallus K− or + orange, C+ red, KC−, Pd−; medulla I+ blue; containing erythrin and traces of lecanoric and/or gyrophoric acids.

S: Otago (Rees Valley). In shaded, dry underhang at forest edge above 25 Mile Creek. Known also from Europe and Scandinavia (Purvis et al. 1992; Nimis 1993; Santesson 1993; Egea & Torrente 1994; Scholz 2000; Coppins 2002b; Santesson et al. 2004).

Lecanographa abscondita is characterised by: the saxicolous (dry, shaded underhangs) habit; the scurfy yellowish thallus (C+ red); and scattered, black apothecia with blue-white-pruinose discs; and 3–5-septate ascospores, 15–23 × 5–8 μm.
