Trichothelium alboatrum

Phylloporina asplenii. Holotype: New Zealand. Wellington, near Palmerston [North], on Asplenium bulbiferum, H.H. Allan 235 – W [see Santesson (1952: 271)].

Description : Flora (1985: 587).

N: Wellington (Kitchener Park Feilding, Palmerston North, Colonial Knob near Wellington). On fern fronds and leaves of trees in lowland forest. Collected by Sven Berggren (S), John Buchanan (GLAM, WELT) and H.H. Allan (W). Widespread in the tropics including Vanuatu and Australia (Santesson 1952; Kantvilas et al. 1994; Lücking & Kalb 2001; Lücking et al. 2001; McCarthy 2001i, 2003c: 156; 2003d: 103–104; Herrera-Campos et al. 2004).

Pantropical

Trichothelium alboatrum is characterised by: the foliicolous habit; black, hemispherical perithecia, 0.1–0.2 mm diam., each with 2–4(–6) white-tipped but otherwise black spines; and 3(–7)-septate ascospores, 20–40 × 3.5 μm.
