Anthracothecium cellulosum

A. cellulosum (C.Knight) Müll.Arg., Bull Herb. Boissier 2, App. 1: 96 (1894).

Verrucaria cellulosa C.Knight, Trans. Linn. Soc. 23: 100 (1860).

Lectotype. New Zealand. Sine loco [probably Auckland], Charles Knight 323 – BM [fide Galloway (1985a: 7)]. The type specimen is on smooth bark, possibly supplejack from deep shade, a likely substratum for this taxon.

Description : Flora (1985: 7).

N: ?Auckland. Known only from the type collection.

Anthracothecium cellulosum is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the effuse, spreading, olive-green to pale brownish-grey, shining thallus; solitary, black, scattered, subimmersed to subglobose perithecia, 0.05–0.2 mm diam.; colourless to pale yellowish brown, muriform ascospores, 35–52 × 8–13 μm.
