1769 Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander

botanised at Poverty Bay and other localities in North Island, and at Queen Charlotte Sound in South Island, during Cook's first voyage of discovery in the south seas. Solander prepared his Primitiae Florae Novae Zelandiae, to be accompanied by a set of plates. Some 360 spp. were described and the plates prepared, but the work was not published.

The 37 genera and 134 spp. given for N.Z. were based on specimens collected by the Forsters and A. Sparmann at Dusky Bay and Queen Charlotte Sound during Cook's second Voyage in 1773.

collected ferns, mosses and liverworts at Dusky Sound during Vancouver's voyage. Many were described in Icones Filicum of Hooker and Greville.
