Holotype: New Zealand. Sine loco [probably Wellington], Charles Knight – WELT [Herb. Knight Vol. 30: 6]. Isotypes – BM, G, H-NYL, WELT.

Description : Flora (1985: 346 – as Parmeliella amphibola).

N: South Auckland to Wellington. S: Nelson (Denniston Plateau), Marlborough (Ship Cove Queen Charlotte Sound) to Otago (Chinaman's Flat, Dart Valley, Routeburn, Mt Maungatua). St: (Port Pegasus). Known also from New South Wales and Tasmania (Galloway & Jørgensen 1987: 371; Kantvilas 1990c; Jørgensen & Galloway 1992b: 256; McCarthy 2003c, 2006) and from Argentina (Calvelo & Lorenzo 1989: 660–662).

Fuscoderma amphibolum is characterised by: the corticolous habit; and the irregular, coarsely granular, bluish white soralia that contrast with the tawny, ochre-brown thallus. It is the most widespread and common species of Fuscoderma in Tasmania and New Zealand.
