Holotype: New Zealand. Sine loco (probably Wellington), C. Knight s.n. – H-NYL 22708 [erroneously chosen as lectotype by Mason Hale (1981: 314), since the ascospore measurements written by Nylander on the packet " sp. 1 fuscae, 0,140–0,200 0,025–0,032" agree precisely with the protologue. The H-NYL specimen is, moreover, annotated by G. Salisbury as holotype (Dr O. Vitikainen, pers. comm.)]. Isotype – G.

Ocellularia monosporoides is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the pale, yellowish-fawn, smooth to verrucose, fissured thallus; semi-emergent apothecia, 1–1.3 mm diam., with apically carbonised exciple; hymenium 280–300 μm tall; ascospores colourless to pale-brown, muriform, I−, 120–210 × 30–35 μm, 1 per ascus.
