Stigmidium frigidum

*S. frigidum (Sacc.) Alstrup & D.Hawksw., Meddel. Om Grønland, Bioscience 31: 67 (1990).

*Epicymatia frigida Sacc., Sylloge Fung. 1: 572 (1882).

Description : Lichenicolous. Pseudothecia immersed in surface layers of host; scattered, 60–70 μm diam., ostiole black, 10–20 μm diam., pseudothecial wall brown to dark-brown. Hamathecium absent. Asci elongate-clavate to broadly clavate, 40–55 × 15–20 μm, I−, 4–6-spored. Ascospores irregularly arranged, ellipsoidal, hyaline, 1-septate, smooth-walled, 12–16 × 5–7 μm.

S: Otago (Rock & Pillar Ra.), but probably more widely distributed on host here. Known also from Alaska, Greenland and Norway (Alstrup & Hawksworth 1990; Ihlen 1995).

Bipolar

Host : Thamnolia vermicularis (UV+ chemodeme).

* Stigmidium frigidum is characterised by: the lichenicolous habit (on Thamnolia vermicularis, UV+ chemodeme); the immersed pseudothecia; and colourless, 1-septate ascospores, 12–16 × 5–7 μm.
