Bellemerea subsorediza

Description : Flora (1985: 23 – as Aspicila subsorediza).

Chemistry : Thallus K+ yellow→red, C−, KC+ red, Pd+ yellow-orange; containing norstictic acid.

S: Canterbury (Two Thumbs Ra., Mt Cook summit rocks). High-alpine, on rocks, 2440–3500 m., associating with: Lecidea lactea, L. lapicida, Miriquidica deusta, Sporastatia polyspora, Tremolecia atrata. Known also from the European Alps (Türk et al. 1993; Nimis & Martellos 2003); Scandinavia (Purvis 1984; Santesson 1993; Santesson et al. 2004), North America (Esslinger & Egan 1995) and the South Shetland Is (Søchting et al. 2004).

Bellemerea subsorediza is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the grey-white thallus in small patches delimited by a thin, black prothallus; central, crateriform soralia with grey-white to blackish, granular soredia eventually spreading over whole thallus; and norstictic acid in the medulla.
