On coastal rocks, forming tufted clumps; lobes flattened, terete only at or near apices, to 10 mm tall and 0.1–0.2 mm thick
On freshwater, lakeside rocks inland; thallus areolate–diffract; lobes minute, terete, to 1 mm tall and 0.05 mm thick
Lichina is a widespread, temperate genus of seven species (Kirk et al. 2001), including both maritime and non-maritime taxa (Henssen 1963d, 1969a, 1973). It is included in the family Lichinaceae (Eriksson et al. 2004; Pennycook & Galloway 2004; Eriksson 2005). Two species are known in New Zealand, one being a widespread and commonly encountered marine species, the other a still very poorly known taxon from freshwater, lakeside rocks.
